Grocery Assistant

About the role 

We’re looking for a skilled and passionate cook for our store which is well known for its meals, rolls and sandwiches. This is a hands-on role where you’ll prepare and cook a varied cabinet offering for our customers — from hot meals, sandwiches, rolls and pies to deli staples — while also supporting the Owner/Operators with food safety administration and oversight responsibilities for food preparation areas.

This role reports directly to the Owner/Operators.

Key responsibilities 

• Prepare and cook a varied, appealing cabinet offering using both basic and advanced cooking techniques
• Administer and oversee food safety compliance store-wide, including managing SafeFood Pro records and temperature checks
• Develop and propose new products and seasonal offerings, assist with cabinet pricing, and manage supply ordering
• Share food preparation knowledge and best-practice cooking techniques with the wider team
• Recipe development and recording

Hours 

Full-time, Monday to Friday starting at 5am and finishing between 2 and 3pm.

About you 

• 3–5 years’ experience as a supermarket or café chef, or in a commercial kitchen role
• High level of food preparation and cooking skills, with practical fresh deli or food-to-go experience
• NZ Food Hygiene Qualifications (NZQA Unit Standards 167 and 168)
• Strong initiative, time management, and commitment to food safety and quality standards
• Experience with SafeFood Pro or similar food safety management systems (advantageous)
• Computer experience necessary
