People and Culture Lead

New World Ashburton

4 days per week, 32 Hours

About Us

At New World Ashburton, we’re proud to be locally owned and part of the Mid-Canterbury community. With a team of 180 locals, we provide fresh food, friendly service, and a welcoming shopping experience every day. Our people are at the heart of everything we do — from the checkout to the bakery, from the produce department to the store office. To keep our team supported and thriving, we’re looking for a People and Culture Lead to join us.

The Role

As part of the Senior Leadership Team, you’ll work closely with our Department Managers and staff to drive a positive workplace culture and support our people behind the scenes so they can deliver the best for themselves and our customers. You’ll oversee the full HR function — from recruitment and onboarding to payroll, training, and employee relations — ensuring our store runs smoothly and our team feels valued.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage HR administration including contracts, rosters, and employee records
  • Lead recruitment for store roles — posting ads, conducting interviews and checks, and welcoming new hires
  • Assist with payroll and benefits administration to ensure staff are paid correctly and on time
  • Coordinate training sessions, inductions, and compliance requirements
  • Act as the first point of contact for staff queries, providing guidance or escalating when needed
  • Advise the Senior Leadership Team, Managers, and Employees on performance management, disciplinary processes, and retention strategies
  • Provide confidential support to employees when required
  • Organize employee engagement activities such as surveys and recognition programs

About You

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has strong organizational and administrative skills
  • Communicates clearly and builds positive relationships with staff at all levels
  • Is proactive, approachable, and solutions-focused
  • Has experience in HR or administration (supermarket/retail experience is a bonus)
  • Is confident using HR systems and Microsoft Office

Why Join New World Ashburton?

  • Be part of a supportive team that values people as much as customers, with ongoing training and external support
  • Opportunities to grow your career in HR and retail
  • Staff discounts, funeral Insurance and a fun, dynamic environment
  • A chance to make a real impact on the workplace culture of a busy, ever-evolving supermarket
